Australia uses three standard time zones, Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) which is GMT+10, Australian Central
Standard Time (ACST) which is GMT + 9 1/2 and Australian Western Time (ASWT) which is GMT +8.
Northern Territory, Queensland and now Western Australia do not use Daylight Saving Time. Western Australia
began a three year trial period with Daylight Saving Time in December 2006, however, in May 2009 a referendum was held in Western Australia and voters rejected the continued use of daylight saving time.
The
Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria all start and end daylight saving time on the same dates. Recently, new legislation was passed that extended daylight saving time beginning in 2008. During periods of Daylight Saving Time clocks are advanced by one hour. As an example Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) which is GMT+10 is set
ahead to GMT+11 and is then refered to as Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
Although most of New South Wales observes Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), which is GMT+10, the two communities of Broken
Hill and Lord Howe Island are exceptions. These two communities use Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) which is GMT + 9 1/2.The names in each time zone change along with Daylight Saving Time.
Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) becomes Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), and so forth. |
